Darwin Refrigeration

I was given a 12 volt refrigeration ice box conversion kit made by Darwin in 1983, never used. Brochure states that it draws only 1.4 amps. It is a compressor unit and I intend to run it before going through the trouble of installation. Does anyone have experience with these units? The power draw claims sound too good to be true.
