New England Salsa Braid Splice

Have some new 5/16" salsa single braid and have come to the conclusion that it can not be spliced with a locked Brummel splice or any splice. or if it can not worth the trouble. anyone done it?

Re: New England Salsa Braid Splice

Salsa is generally spliced by a tapered bury with a lock stitch not a brummel. The tapered bury is pretty easy, the weave is a little tight compared to amsteel, but it's still pretty quick to do.

Re: New England Salsa Braid Splice

Did you get extra spicy or mild, I have heard the spicy is really hard to splice. (Sorry could not help it)

I thought single braid hightech line got Brummel splices, but I see it listed to use 12-strand eye splice.

Re: New England Salsa Braid Splice

The Brummell has consistently been shown to be weaker than a lock stitched eye splice, but some find it easier to make. The strength difference is marginal, about 5% loss I think.

Re: New England Salsa Braid Splice

I pondered this attachment problem when securing the ends of my new T-900 halyards to their shackles. Finally decided that if(!) the experts were right about a potential reduction of as much as 50% of the line strength, then my 5/16" halyard, rated at 7000# would never lack for strength enough to hold up any of my sails.

And so I decided that further worrying might get too near the mental black hole of "overthinking" the whole question.

That was about ten years ago or more.
YMMV.
These modern lines are really really (!) strong.

Further, when you need to remove the halyard for washing, it's easy to stitch a tag line to one end to feed through the spar.
Also, by using a (halyard) knot rather than a splice you would later have to cut off, you can easily end-for-end the line after cleaning it.
