It might - but more often, in the case of a new sail replacing old, the better shape and performance from the new sail produces less weather helm than the old "bagged" sail did.

No, a larger roach usually does not produce more weather helm ... as thats usually controlled by where the 'point of maximum draft' is located (controlled by proper halyard tension).

With regards to the topping lift being on one side or the other, etc., I have the largest roach possible that I can fit on a traditional full keeled cutter rig. To easily solve the 'problem' of fouling, etc., the topping lift can be made to automatically 'behave' by tying a short length of small bungee cord perpendicular to the TL and terminating forward on the boom --- in this manner the TL 'always' has a very slight bit of tension on it. This will keep the TL on one side, will prevent the TL from flogging around, etc.
(Actually I replaced the TL with a spring loaded rigid vang and ... much easier to take the weight off the boom when sailing in light air, especially when you need more twist aloft.)

Roach it is!

I went down to the loft and chatted with the designer for quite a while and he convinced me that the TL issue was really not going to be a big deal, or no deal at all, and he is adamant about the increased performance. I have decided that if I have to loosen/tighten the TL, so be it. I have decided to add lazy jacks also, so I might have to fidddle with them too. Rich, I may try the bungee idea; that's a simple smart fix.

I agree with Jeff. It is those light wind days when I am going to love this. (Cape Dorys sail just fine in lots of wind.) I am pretty psyched about these new sails and the added performance. These will be Hallett sails, and the Hallet family has won a lot of sailboat races in these parts.

By the way, I agree it looks like TrueBlue's TL is too tight, and my guess is that the sail is not setting quite right because of that. I have inadvertantly done that, and wondered why my main looked funky. Not hung up, just baggy.

TB, you need to install a gas spring into your rodkicker and get rid of the TL.
I use rodkicker with gas spring and its great. I kept my TL put left it loose so it won't be a problem to the roach main.

I had a new roachier main made for my Ranger. It wasn't the topping lift it hung up on in light air tacks. It was the backstay. No kind of vang will cure that. In a breeze it was no problem.
