Pilot birth width

How wide does a pilot birth need to be? I'm thinking 34' or so. I'm thinking of changing a storage shelf for a pilot birth so we have more usable bunks offshore. Our Newport doesn't seem to hobbyhorse too much but I seem to be the only one who can get "rocked to sleep" in the v-birth in big seas.

I sleep on my settee and it's only 18". Most pictures that I've seen show people sleeping in them with a lee cloth while under way. I would think the major concern is how big to make it for getting in and out of.
