Cleaning sails?

Sorry guys its time for another dumb question from a newbie.

We bought out first sail bot during the summer last year and now its out of the water for the winter and the sails are off the boat and at home.

When I took them down and put them in the sail bags I'm sure that they would benefit from a clean / wash.

Do people clean sails and if so, how?

Best regards

Robert

Re: Cleaning sails?

There are products made to clean sails. Try Google. Avoid bleach products as it will weaken the stitching.
As for how to clean, depending on how big your sails are, you can use a large trash can or for larger sails, a small, cheapie kiddie pool.

Re: Cleaning sails?

Through my sailmaker (Bacon), mine are getting sent off to be cleaned. They charge by the pound. My headsail has some beginnings of mold on the UV stripe (it's a roller jib), I think it'll be around 100$.

Oh BTW, your question is a good one....folks have ruined sails by using bleach...

Re: Cleaning sails?

Odo-Ban kills mold/mildew but does not damage fabric if used by directions.
It does not remove the stains...

You pretty much have to put up with any stains because I know of nothing that will be safe for the sails to take out mildew staining.

I'll see what they look like when I get them back and report the findings....
