Refinish interior teak
I want to refinish the interior teak on my boat, I need advise on the best way to clean the oil in the wood and best finish to use. I would like a clear high gloss finish when done.
Thanks in advance, Fred
We're in the middle of such a project ourselves at the moment.
We did a light sanding and decided on satin Varathane. We have a lot of wood, and felt that all high gloss would be a bit overpowering. We are doing the highlights - details and beading on the cabinet doors, bulkhead edge moldings, companionway moldings and fiddles in high gloss for some contrast. I use a natural bristle brush and thin the product about 15 - 20% so brush marks flow out better. So far it's looking pretty good.
This time of year everything takes longer to dry so patience is important.
I'm also refinishing the wood in the cabin interior. Its wall to wall teak in there and there are some cracks, separations between some of the boards on the wall that need filling. Any suggestion re what to use before varnishing them?
My boat's interiors are also 100% teak, all in good condition except for the pilothouse, which is subjected to the most wear and UV exposure. I stripped all varnished finishes in the pilothouse down to bare teak with a hot air gun, and recoated with urethane varnish.
My goal was to match the orginal finish of the other cabins, so obtained the original spec from Nauticat in Finland. A wood grain filler paste was first used to fill all minor cracks and open grain - followed by sanding after drying. Then four coats of Interlux Goldspar satin, fine sanded between coats - finished the work. wood grain filler
It looks great and resulted in a glass smooth surface, free of voids - which would otherwise detract from the finish. If your cracks and gaps are fairly large, try applying the paste in layers, drying between each. A teak tinted stain could be used to darken the filled areas, using a fine brush, to obtain the desired effect.
