Garmin 498 C Sounder Opinions ? Transome mounted Transducer?

Looking for info on Garmin 498 C Sounder. Any suggestions or opinions

It can be bought with a transome mounted transducer. Opinions?

Not knowing I would prefer a standard thru hull mounted transducer.

Any suggestions?

Good place to purchase?

Thank You

The Garmin units are pretty good... I use a 192C on my boat. The 498C has the coastal charts built in to the ROM. If your boat has a solid hull, you may be able to mount the transducer internally, using an oil-filled mount, and not drill any holes through the hull. Standard through hull or an internal oil-mount are preferable to a transom mount generally. They're more reliable and less subject to damage and other problems.

Defender.com and pyatch.net generally have pretty good prices on electronics.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
