life line stanchions

I have a 1972 Tartan 30 and want to rebed the life line stanchions. I cannot locate any thru bolts from inside the cabin. There are raised portions on the deck or "bosses" and the stanchions may be just screwed into these bosses rather than thru bolted. Does anyone have any knowledge about this and can I just use thru bolts with either a backing plate or large washers?
