Islander 34 chain plates

I''m looking a buying a 1969 Islander 34. But, I''m told that it has problems with the chain plates being loose and the associated hull/deck joint leaking. Also, told this is a typical problem for Islanders. Anyone know how serious this is and whether it''s hard to fix yourself?
Thanks.
