Mast Head Light

My mast head light looks to be about 30 years old. While I have the mast off the boat, I would like to replace it. I would love to replace the mast head light with LED's, but the price of a LED mast head light, knocked my socks off. I will be replacing the wiring in the mast also. Anyone have any recommendations ?

If you anchor out frequently, in the long run, the LEDs aren't so bad. Yes, expensive up front, but the power savings are significant as well over a "regular" anchor light and/or tri-color.

I will be in the caribbean until futher notice, I will be leaving late summer depending on the weather. I do plan on spending 98% of my time on the hook. I've just been spending so much money getting the boat ready, I had sticker shock when I saw the prices of LED Mast lights.

I know that feeling too well. I will be upgrading to LED's myself as soon as I can.

A buddy purchased an anchor lite from http://www.bebi-electronics.com/index.html and is very happy with it, an alternative to the sticker shock.

Freesail...I would not spend the $$ on the led masthead light. You don't need it in the caribe. Most folks just hang one of the Davis led all-arounds in their cockpit when at anchor as the biggest danger is in being run into by drunks in dinghys///and they don't look up!! <g> At sea, your runing lights draw a couple of amps if conventional and I've never found that to be a significant issue.
Note...I might go for the LED for ocean passagemaking. My comments pertain to island hopping and coastal work and life at anchor in the caribe. (My observation is tha less than half the boats in any harbor have any type of anchor light down there and there is no enforcement....with a dark blue hull, I kinda liked my Davis to protect the Awlgrip!<g>)
Here's a link to theDavis if you aren't familiar with it. They also make a $50 masthead anchor led light.

Dr led bulbs are alot cheaper if your fixture is ok I think they recently got uscg approval for 2nm.

The trouble is the fixture does look old, very old. I would like to replace it with something, while the mast is down.

OK...so replace it with a conventional fixture and add an LED bulb or just leave it conventional and use the Davis at anchor.

Here's the link to the bulbs ($42) and the conventional masthead fixtures they work in.
