Mac, bootcamp and windows

Thanks for the info guys

I bought a Macbook Pro yesterday. I also own a few pc laptops and desktops for my profession and wanted to try a Mac, specifically for its graphic and multimedia abilities (not least to make our cruising DVDs). I would like to use it as our primary computer on board since it has a nice 17" screen.

When I recently phoned Raymarine they basically told me not not even try the Vista OS with their RNS program. They suggested I stick with XP (Raymarine claim their program doesn't work with Mac). So that leaves me to install XP with Bootcamp on the Mac.

However our intro to the Mac world is not going smoothly. The brand new Mac keeps freezing up - such that I have to unplug it and take the battery out. This is one of the reasons I've finally given up on PC - I HATE hanging and freezing computers!!!!!! The Mac dealer says we must have received a lemon and they will exchange it. However it is not an auspicious start... I'll keep you informed.

Question: Anyone tried Raymarine RNS with Windows VISTA?

Magnus

Encouraged by all the suggestions of compatibility, I made another attempt. The first result is that LINUX cannot find the ethernet connection anymore. Ok, I hadn't switched on the computer for a week, since it last knew how, so maybe it forgot by now. Odd though, it was working just fine with Internet last week.
It doesn't help that the Mandrake web-site has moved, so the help has to be addressed through a different computer. I had hoped LINUX had moved on from my previous attempt (trying to evade leaving Win'95) when the Red Hat LINUX needed the CD drive "mounted". That was overcome with a lot of professional help, only to discover that the computer was not really large enough to handle LINUX anyway, despite claims to the contrary.
Sorry - the ignorant should not complain, I know. Either learn how to do it or stump up the cash for a VISTA capable machine.

Idiens-

Why don't you try a distro of Unbuntu linux. It has become very easy to install, and is based on the very popular Debian distro. It also supports a lot of hardware out of the box. Spacewise, and CPU wise, it can run on a very limited hardware platform... just don't install all the "geekware" like Apache, etc..

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Thanks for the tip. I looked at their web-site, it looks feasible. Snag is, my Compaq Armada has just decided it is time for its ethernet card to fail.
So now I am down to four "perfectly good" computers.
