No, the two standards are not interchangeable. NMEA 0183 is a serial based standard at 4800 baud. NMEA is a much higher speed standard, but I don't recall the exact speed. The wiring is also different. NMEA 2000 uses a special standardized plug, rather than the bare wires you usually find with NMEA 0183 gear.
If you are looking to upgrade, I would go with NMEA 2000 gear, as it has major benefits in terms of simplifying the wiring and data connections on a boat. If you have specific questions, let me know.
