Another thought was to make a new set out of red oak and varathane them.
Goose, What ever you do - do not use red oak. There is a reason that white oak is the preferred marine oak. Closed pores. Oak red or white tends to turn black when exposed to water. You couldn't keep enough of any finish on it. One nick esp. the small unseen & touched up ones and the finish is peeling and the wood is going black.
Use the right wood and appropriate finish for boat work. All with experience will agree that bright work looks great, especially on someone else’s boat if sailing is what you want to do.
