Does anyone have any good sites to get lifeline and terminal ends. And what do people suggest 1x19 or 7x7 wire? Coated or uncoated? Right now I have 3/16 wire and my terminal studs are 5/16 threads. Thanks in advance.
You should use uncoated wire, as the coated wire can hide corrosion problems and is more subject to early failure. 1x19 is probably more common. CS Johnson might be a good place to look.
Im going to be doing a total refit of the lifelines on my P-36 soon. Is uncoated ok when your going to be putting netting around it also? The current lifeline is coated and showing signs of rust all over the place and sags so bad in most places its not even usefull.
If you have kids aboard I would recommend coated lifelines. Small hooks on bare wire can develope over time and they can give you a nasty slice...particularly kids who tend to hold on to the lines like a stair banister as they go forward.
Here's another vote for coated lifelines. When I had them redone on my boat, the rigger talked to me about both options (and even about using line instead) and after hearing all that, I thought the coated would fit my use of the boat better. Really, it's a matter of taste, and YMMV.
You could always go with synthetic lifelines, made of spectra...
