Next time at the boat, take the cover off, if there are wires, then you have a light, that either needs a bulb, connected, or you just haven't found the switch. Some are wired in with the running lights, so you may try turning them on and checking for a light at the compass.
One thing to remember is that if you install a light, twist the wires together (twisted pair) to cut down on intererence with the compass.
