I'm in the market for an "in-dash" type stereo with CD player and a wired remote. Would be interested in what brands/models you may or may not recommend. Unit will be installed out of the weather with remote on deck.

As long as it is out of the weather, I'd go to Wally World and buy the cheapest in-dash unit I could get. I found one for under 30 dollars that had about 10-watts per channel and it blasts us out of the boat! I can hear Buffett singing "Let's get drunk and..." 3 docks away. (And I wonder why my neighbors don't seem friendly)

Clarion makes a couple of good units, like their M255 and M455 which can accept a wired remote. They have two remotes available... one has an LCD display, the other does not. They also have a limited functionality iPod adapter, that allows you to control the iPod from the deck controls. The reason i say it is limited functionality is that it only allows you to play from five specially named playlists... not full iPod functionality as found on the Alpine and Pioneer units.

As you can see...a number of the marine stereos they sell can be used with wired remotes. Unfortunately...regular car stereos while cheaper do not come with wired remotes since it is kind of ridiculous. Many non-marine units do have wireless remotes but they are line of sight IR type which may be impractical for your purposes. Since your need sound limited, if you can use a wireless remote I would suggest this one which also adds a jack to make it ipod or other player compatible:

This is a nice unit for $149 but the wired remote will set you back another $60 bucks!

Wouldn't matter to me.. I'm basically tone deaf... used to make my wife laugh... since she had a very good ear for music... Needless to say, I'm not all that picky about my speakers for my personal use.

Thanks to all who replied. I've done quite a bit of research today and I've actually changed my mind on the unit a time or two. Right now I'm leaning toward the JBL MR4 unit and may be pairing it with JBL speakers as well.
