Speaker baffles..?

Just mounted some Polk 650 speakers in the cockpit, next to the companionway, replacing the broken depth and speed instruments, and also purchased some plastic covers for the back, to cover the back of the speakers.

Anyone have any advice on anything I could add, inside the PVC covers, to improve / focus the sound outwards?

I hear conflicting advice. Needs to be sealed...needs air to drive sound.

Help.

Sealing will help bass response. suggest adding fiberglass mat insulation to the inside of pvc covers and SEALING the pvccovers to your cabin glass with silicone to prevent air leaks which cost you bass response.
I like the 650's...good choice in this price range...but you can only expect so much out of a relatively cheap speaker. If you are using a standard car stereo to power them, then you can help a bit with the sealing/filling but you may need more power to get the sound levels you are looking for in the open air of the cockpit so a small amp might be your next step if unsatisfied.

Thanks, Cam.

I assume you mean mat insulation, as in sound, rather than mat cloth, as in West Systems. Would a 2 part liquid foam be a way to go, perhaps?

Geary-

What kind of sailing do you do in your boat? If you sail offshore at all, I hope you installed the speakers behind deckplates, so that you can close off the openings in heavy weather...

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
