Are all mast boots the same?

We'll be stepping our mast next week to transit the Champlain Canal. Our mast boot is cracked and leaking (read: old) and we want to replace it. Are all mast boots the same (other than size)? Or is there one particular brand/type that's better?

The guy that maintains the fleet at the club that I sail from, uses an adhesive roofing patch on the Pearsons and Cals that he buys at Lowe's...

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

There are mast boots for production boats. Then there are the universal mast boots. But the best are made by the owner and fitted to the vessel.
The very best are the ones that don't leak when you have boarding seas, heavy rain or just plain drizzle. Especially when the neighbor's dog thinks your mast is a fire hydrant.

Ours is pretty old and is missing chunks, so I'm thinking a new one may have a little less infiltration I'm just trying to figure out what to buy... I have no idea who made the spar in 1984 so finding a pre-done one may be difficult. Defender sells universal boots... any ideas?
