Propane Connection

Hi all. A quick question on safe propane connections. I have a type 1 cylinder in a propane locker drained outboard. In terms of regulators and hoses, can I just use a standard BBQ regulator/hose of the variety that I could purchase at any hardware store and with the outside thread, or is there any reason that I should go with the much more expensive "marine" versions as sold by most marine sources?
