Prop shaft elec generation

Over the years, I have heard of people rigging an alternator to their propeller shaft, using pulleys of course, to generate elec power while under sail. I have also heard both that it is ok! and that it is hard on a velvet drive transmission. On my boat, rigging the system up would be rather easy. I am about to embark on an extended voyage, and would like any input available on such a system.

When sailing, unless I jam a screwdriver into the Morse coupling, the shaft spins rather fast while under sail, on just my 2 blade prop. It doesn't seem to have impacted the Tranny since 1983.

Advice/Opinions solicited
Most importantly will it destroy my Velvet Drive?
Any advice on an optimal ratio of shaft pulley to alternator pully size?
