paint for wooden rudder

Hi all. We have a late 70s trailer sailer that we love. Recently I had noticed the paint was flaking off and looking really shabby on the wooden rudder so I decided to strip it off. I dont want to lacquer it as wouldnt suit the rest of the boat. My question is what do I paint it with?
We day sail a fair bit but we also cruise for long weekends so it is in the water for extended periods. Any sugestions?

I would use a 1 part marine grade polyurethane paint over the proper primer. Make sure you properly scrape and sand the rudder first
