Windvane Steering Wanted
I wish to install Windvane Steering on a 38ft Beneteau 10.5tn which is currently in UK.
Any comments on selection or installation would be welcome as would details of any secondhand gear. |

Windvane Steering Wanted
I do not know what the shapr of your stern looks like so I can just give you a good lead!
We have the top half of Scanmar''s AutoHelm windsteering device.Do not need the seperate rudder because we have a trim tab on outboard rudder.I bought mine at the Scanmar manf. site in Richmond,Ca.I do know they handle 4 or 5 different approaches to wind steering. In Latitude 38 this month there is a used Monitor for sale! |
I am looking to choose a self-steerer for a 38-foot Bruce Roberts. Does anyone have comments they'd like to share, good or bad, about their self-steerers?

Flicker-
Please don't revive old threads... it is considered poor net etiquette to do so... Also, the wind vane a 38' Roberts design would require is probably slightly different from that a 38' Beneteau would require since they are very different designs. |
Really? Poor etiquette. I'm sorry. I didn't know. Old threads. Yes, yes, I see that two 38s might be slightly different. You see, I just thought conversation was conversation and content was content. How long does a thread have to be inactive before it's poor etiquette to respond to it?
Actually, I had wanted to start my own thread on this topic but I couldn't find the "start new thread" icon. Where would I find that? Thanks. I'm sure you'll let me know how to start my own thread. Perhaps by writing the information I need on this thread so I can find it. Please? Also, is it okay to revive an old thread if I started it myself some time ago but never got an adequate response; and now times have changed enough that the answer might be different as well as interesting to contrast with the previous answer? (As with the Yuan question.) Is that okay or would that be poor etiquette as well. Please help me here learn the proper etiquette and yet still have my sailing questions answered. Thank you for your courtesy, Sailingdog. |
Flicker - I am not sure about the logic of not restarting old threads, it does show you have taken the trouble to look for an appropriate answer before posing a question. I suppose if the user has the software set up to look at first post first (the default), instead of setting last post first, it makes a difference.
You have to go to Quick Menu - Forums, choose a forum, then the upper left button is for new threads in that forum. Hydrovane wind self steering gear seems to be getting lots of good write-ups. It also acts as an emergency rudder, so is favoured on the ARC, where and emergency rudder is required kit. |
Idiens, thanks for the good word on the Hydrovane. As I've been looking vanes up, I don't think I've seen Hydrovanes either listed on company sites or for sale used. I see Monitor, Sailomet, Sayers, and old Arieses. I'll look for the Hydro web site.
Ohhhh. Now I see it! I can't help but laugh. Okay, I got New Thread capability. Thanks again, Flicker |
