for what is worth, I would recommend the Yamaha High Thrust 8hp, 4stroke. I own a SJ 7.7 and just recently put a High Thrust 9.9hp on it and I love it. Yamaha is proud of them.. very pricey but very nice!

You should be able to get by with 4hp. I had a Kirby 25 with a 4 hp and it was plenty powerful to push the boat in any winds that I encountered. There is a tendancy to over power small boats these days which means carrying a lot of extra weight around and means a lot more work stripping the transom to go racing.

I agree with Jeff, many people overpower there boats. Don''t know exactly where you are sailing in NB but the currents aren''t opressive in many areas. If you are primarily racing off Newport or up in the Greenwich area 4 horse should be fine. I am pushing a CD25 (read:heavy) with a Nissan 8 hp with no problems at all going through the Race (Fishers Island) or Watch Hill passage these currents can run at 3 knots or better.
The one caveat besides currents is pushing the boat against seas and wind. Two of the J24 racers in my area are using 5hp and they claim it works fine except when they are motoring through some high current areas where SOG falls to 1.5 knots.
