Buy Used Mainsail?

I live near Annapolis and just bought a 1984 Endeavour. The main is in poor shape. There are a few good used sails for sale near the size I need...

If the luff should be about 38'9", and the foot about 11'6''....... if I bougfht a used sail 38' luff, 11'2'' foot- would that used sail be noticebly small, for appearanceand/or performance?

I saw a used north main supposedly in great condition about this size......

It should be fine. Your boom should follow it up the mast, just give out a little down haul.

If it's a dacron cruising sail, you should be fine. If it's a laminate sail of any kind - I would suggest you not get it as they are usually cut and shaped/moulded for a particular hull form, and they also deteriorate pretty quickly.

Not sure about the boom following it up the stick, as I would expect (hope ??) your gooseneck is pretty securely attached to the mast.

The real problem is if the sail slugs or bolt rope aren't the right kind for your boat or if you need other modifications made so the sail will work on your boat. IIRC, a good general rule of thumb is if you have to spend more than 10% of the cost of a new sail on a used one to get it to work on your boat, you're probably better off getting a new sail.

I've done this and it's a stopgap for four or five seasons at best. Cost to me: $300 to go from a 1984 Dacron main in sad shape to a three-year-old Kevlar-Mylar composite that fits closely. It's deteriorating much faster than the Dacron would, however, and will buy me at best another season or two.

I have had better luck with a No. 1 and No. 3 recut racing sails. In the future, I would pop for a new main cut exactly for my boat ($2,600-$3,000) and keep on with the recycled foresails, which are plentiful in my boat's foretriangle dimensions from various pickier-than-me racing types. Cost to convert (cut and change from tape luff to hank-on): $130-$150 per headsail.
