Adding temp. gauge to Yanmar 2GMF

I would like to add a temp gauge to my Yanmar 2GMF and I was hoping to gain a little understanding on how this all goes together.

I've learned that I need a VDO 3101103 gauge and a VDO 803/1/11 sender for this engine, but I'm not sure it all goes together.

The stock Yanmar control panel has a high-temp warning light/alarm which no doubt uses a sender on the engine.

So does this VDO sender replace the stock sender, or does it mount elsewhere? Do the stock temp alarm and the VDO gauge share a sender?

Hopefully someone has experience with this and can point me in the right direction - my boat is 4 hours away so I hope to have everything I need for the job before my next trip.

The VDO sender will be in addition to the Yanmar sender. You will need to find a place to install it in the fw water circuit. Note it will need to be grounded as the circuit is completed that way. A piping tee connected to the engine is probably the way to go.

I would check with both VDO and Yanmar to find out what the thread and pitch of the stock sensor in the engine is. SOMETIMES you get lucky, and the stock sensor can be replaced with one that has two output connections--one for the alarm, and the other for a gauge. There really are such things, and it can be worth calling different gauge makers to find out if they make one that matches the thread/pitch of the stock sender.
