Varnish on both sides?
so, I'm mid varnish project. Things like handrails, eyebrows, etc. I've got 5 or six coats on all the sides, except the sides that will mount to the boat, which I kept raw (save for a few drips)
wondering, since I've still going at it: Should I slap a coat on the raw side, for protection--or will that mess up the seal using boatlife?
I seal the bottom of mine. I find it really helps make the varnish last longer and it protects the wood.
I would slap a layer on the bottom to seal out the moisture...which is what the varnishing is all about to begin with. It shouldn't interfere with the sealant, as long as the varnish is well adhered and completely dry before you apply the sealant. It will also, probably, help keep the varnish on the other sides in better shape, since moisture getting underneath the varnish is a big source of varnish failures IIRC.
