Where to measure a winch at?
I assume it is at teh narrowest point on the drum, correct? I have realy realy old ones and can not fine info on them and would like to replace them with new self tailers of the same size. Thanks in advance!

The winch makers all have charts that will tell you what size you need base on how big the sails are in sg ft.

Lewmar has a nice winch size calculator...and you can always go up a size if you think the measurements they've given you are wrong. BTW, most modern winches aren't generally measured in diameter...but in gear ratios.

For example: a Lewmar 40ST is a dual speed winch with a high-gear-ratio of about 40:1, the Lewmar 8 is a single speed winch with a 8:1 mechanical advantage.

I have a Barient #4s Im thinking that means 4 inch drum but I have yet to find any real info on them.

LOL... Barients aren't modern winches in that sense... they don't size them by gear ratio. Use the lewmar winch sizing guide. It is available here.
