What gear is there now and what parts need to be replaced and why?

In general the easiest approach would be to use the same stuff again, if its been adequate and is still made. otherwise, we have FurleX and it has been outstanding and troublefree.

Why are you replacing? As SF has pointed out, rebuilding or refurbing the old unit is probably cheaper and easier.

Harken furling hurricane damage

the track for the sail is bent, not badly but bent, the drum is destroyed. So all I have is the track and a few fittings, the part that swivels to lift the sail and the bent track, and the attachment to the deck. I thought with all this missing I might as well up date to a newer design. This is a older version of furling. Is this a bad idea ?

Given what you said, replacement sounds good to me.. since the parts that are damaged may well cost almost as much as a new unit. :D Be aware that many companies will have you replace the forestay when you install a new furling unit, especially if your headstay is older than 5-10 years old.
