Installing An Autopilot
I''d like to install an Autopilot (ST 1000/2000 by Rayethon) in my 28'' Sail boat.

Any comments or recommendations, based on real experience with these?

Installing An Autopilot
I have installed two Raytheon wheel pilots; one on my previous boat, a 30'' C&C, and a second on my current boat, a 34'' Nicholson. On both occasions, I did most of the work but left mounting the control head to the boat yard. Installing the autopilot is basically running wires and hooking up said wires to the control head and a power source. The power cord provided is notorious too short to do anything with. Make sure you replace it with the same guage wire with a fuse. After the physical instal, the autopilot must be calibrated first at the dock and then underway in the ocean. This is easily done if you have someone helping you out. Raytheon instructions are very good as is their tech support. Good luck.

Thank you for your help.
Did you have any problems with the autopilots while sailing.
Things like "weird" attitudes, off tracking etc.??

Installing An Autopilot
Yes. Autopilots are not perfect but can be used in most motoring situations and when the sail plan is well balanced. The autopilot has approx. a dozen settings that need to be "tweaked" for the boat and sometimes due to the conditions. Its not a big deal; the manual spells out which setting to change given an undesireable autopilot trait. Obviously the autopilot cannot compensate for things like tidal drift; you need to just set you course high or low to offset. Raytheon documention is quite good; I don''t think you have anything to worry about. Is this a tiller pilot or a wheel pilot?
