Stern Gland & Cutlass Bearing....

Just hauled out my C&C 36 for antifoul and stern gland/stuffing box maintenance. I've undone the joint but if I slide it all the way back until it touches the flange at the back of the gearbox there is absolutely no room to pack anything in, it needs to slide back more. Anyone else had this problem and any suggestions ?

Also I have about 1-2mm of play in the cutlass bearing. Is this acceptable or should it be a tighter fit ?
