The keel, being "the main center-line structural member, running fore and aft along the bottom of the ship, sometimes referred to as the backbone" does not necessarily protrude from the hull in it's entirety. Nevertheless, it's support, as seen in the second photo with the curved keel blocks, is the ideal way to support the vessel. The appendage, or scrotal sac if you will, seen in the photo is of little use in supporting the vessel but excellent for high speed retrieval of fishing nets and lobster pots. It's contributions to stability, speed, and sea-keeping are debatable. (a vbg)
