Hose clamp on mast boot?

I am still working on getting an old boat into shape. The mast step was recently repaired. There is a rubber looking wrap around the bottom of the mast held on by hose clamps.......

Should I put something over this? Shouls I just duct tape the clamps? (I am thinking the genoa is goingto drag along the clamp, etc.)

You could put some type of fabric cover, like this:

Photos please... makes giving advice easier, since you could be describing a wide variety of setups.

If it is a normal mast boot, I'd definitely cover the clamps with something, as they're the most likely thing to chafe the sail...but a photo would help show what the situation really is.

Get your mast boot nice and tight repair any holes, then use tie raps (right name??) as I have made for mine in the photo.

The have all kinds of sizes, if its short use 2. Cheap, light efficient and does not damage anything.

This was my boot before applying heat to shrink wrap. After I shrank it it fits perfectly.
