Not sure if I had to mention this, but don't forget to make sure he welds it back with SS rods or wire! If you use regular steel filler metal, it is just a garbage weld and the metal won't "heal" itself like SS does in the future, heck, or even stick together. The welder should also use a fresh brush in order to not impregnate the welding materials with regular stainless, not use a grinder, and clean it with acetone right before striking the arc.
I know it sounds like surgery, but with a boat's stainless, it need to be done properly without shortcuts that cn bite you in the ass when you're driving down the river later.
Last time I had to buy SS rods/wire, it was about $30.00 vs the regular spools at about $6.00. The cost of the job and the cleanliness of the equipment and shop should tell you whether or not to have the work done there. Just like picking a sail loft!
