Well, normally I would agree that it's excessive, but, we recently moved aboard full time, ( I finally gave into my wifes dream ) so until I have the galley redone I figured this was good, and it is.

The Toddy system looks interesting Bardo - but I still need more convincing. But, just searched through your link, and found that Bodum makes an unbreakable French Press. Too small though - ours is an 8-cup.

Looked a bit deeper - Bodum makes an 8-cup unbreakable polycarbonate French Press too!

We'll have to address this issue, the Admiral and I, when we start crusing. So I'm watching with interest.

A month or two ago, the Admiral spotted a Cuisinart 12VDC drip maker somewhere. I wonder if that's any good? I suspect any 12VDC drip brewer that would actually do even a passable, much less decent, much less good job of producing drip coffee would draw quite a bit of battery.

Bardo,

While you and others may find Toddy system coffee acceptable, even good, I don't see how it could possibly mimic freshly-roasted, and even more freshly-ground coffee brewed at the proper temperature for the proper amount of time. Coffee aficionados, like myself, go to a great deal of trouble getting everything Just So, to make that happen.

I've even had a certified espresso snob complement me on my drip coffee

That being said: Far be it from me to dismiss something out-of-hand. I'll have to give the Toddy system a try.

Jim

The trouble with many Dc coffee makers is that they take so long to make coffee.

I posted this early morning picture of my on-the-hook coffee ritual before, but - what could be simpler than heating some spring water on the stove top (to just before boiling) and then pouring it into the coffee press?

Bardo is on a distinguished road
Jim,

It seems unlikely, I know. But I was VERY surprised. I too pride myself on my steaming hot, robust coffee. The beauty of the Toddy is that once the "concentrate" is brewed, you pick the strength in mixing the water in per cup. One caution: This coffee is SMOOTH, like I said 40% or so less acid. Easy on the stomach. But if the acid is what you seek, then Toddy ain't your bag. Myself, I got enough acid from shipboard Navy coffee to last me a lifetime (a year or 2 shorter for having actually drunk the stuff).

Bodum rules (or it's generic copycats).
Normally, I'd agree, and I took a Bodum camping until I broke the damn thing. But there's a certain logic to keeping the water heating and coffee brewing confined in one device, as opposed to burning propane to heat a less than accurate amount of water (unless you are using the excess for dish rinsing).

But we will be at-dock liveaboards increasingly until we leave in 2009, with plenty of shorepower. After that, I'll have Cam- and CD-levels of AGM house battery amp-hours to play with, plus the capacity to replace them. What I won't always have is access to propane to run the stove for heating water (fittings and availability are potential issues in foreign places). If it were a smaller boat, yes, Bodum all the way, but I've had to come to terms with a different balance of conservatism versus convenience on the bigger boat, especially as I will have an electrical system that could be characterized as "overkill".
