On a recent expedition, it was brought home to me that simply pouring boiling water into a filter-lined plastic filter holder over a drippy Thermos was not appeasing my coffee jones in the mornings. I have considered a Pyrex Bodum coffee press affair, but what I would like to hear about are SUCCESSFUL and DURABLE coffee makers that either work on 12 VDC or via inverter/switched that are mounted from the top under cabinetry and can work via the usual drip filter method.

Gimbals are optional. If it's that lumpy, I can percolate it (ack!) or do espresso on the gimballed stove.

It's surprising what an issue this is, but then I grind my own blend at home and would rather have one mug of great coffee than a pot of insipid compromise.

I am going to be getting a Forespar (or Force 10...can't remember) gimballed single-burner propane bulkhead stove thingie for the pilothouse in very heavy weather to do soup, etc., but that's not going to be an everyday thing.

I bought a 12v coffee drip maker and it doesn't work well (even though it nominally has 2 amps less draw than my circuit, the fuse always pops) and I can't seem to get the hang of Bodum-style presses. I researched the cost of getting an AC circuit powerful enough to drive a Espresso machine and found it to be too expensive so I've shelved my idea of getting a good ristretto in the morning. There is a thread (about a year old) with a lively discussion on 12v DC and AC wiring for a coffee machine.

I have one of those, used it when I was racing offroad, took for ever to brew a pot, but it works and when your in the desert, 50 miles away from the closest cafe' and it's 10 degs out, it will make any coffee taste like the finest blue Mountain Blend

I want to offer you and the other an alternative that I just discovered. Its called cold brewed coffee, and basically its just that. you buy the kit (Toddy is the brand I bought), and pour a pound of rough ground beans in with like 8 or 9 cups of water, and leave it over night. Next morning your unplug the bottom and let the coffee drain into a carafe. It is delicious, and like 40% less acid than hot brewed. Best part: you get 48 oz of concentrated coffee that you can put in the cooler for 2 weeks with no degradation to taste. Just mix it with hot water or microwave. The good hotels are all making this stuff now. Google Toddy and go to the site. I can appreciate the serious nature of our coffee worship!

I fail to understand why boaters insist upon using electric coffee brewers onboard . . . mind boggling indeed.

try the TUPPERWARE Coffee plunger the glass beaker sits in side a plastic outer shell I have dropped this a number of times and it didnt break. Not cheep.
