What size boat are you talking about? Inboard diesel or outboard? What size is the current battery?

Probably the hardest part will be finding a location to place the second battery.
After you have found a location for it, Parrellel it to the first and you have doubled your Ah. Probably best if you make sure both batteries are of the same type and amps.
Others may be of more help, but I have three group 27's parrelleled with 90 amps each for a total of 270 amp.

Edit: We are talking about a house bank correct?
Do you have a seperate starting battery?

More information rather than less is more useful in general when asking for advice.

What boat do you have?
What batteries do you have aboard currently?
What kind of charging system do you have aboard?
Do you dock the boat at a dock with shorepower?
How long do you normally go out for?
What is your average daily usage?

BTW, if you're increasing your house battery bank, it might be wiser, especially if the current battery is older, to replace it at the same time. Otherwise it can shorten the life of the newer batteries. YMMV.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

What matters is amp hours, not amps. What you need are deep cycle batteries, and the means to charge them. To add a second battery, you should have a similar sized and type battery, wired negative to negative, positive to positive, then run the postive lead to the boat from one battery and the negative from the other battery to the boat.

Sounds like your outboard doesn't charge the house battery. If so, it may make more sense to consider ways to charge it when cruising rather than just adding another battery. Choices would include an outboard with an alternator, solar panels, a portable generator with 12V output, or wind generator. I like the first option. I cruised for many years on a Pearson 26 with a single deep cycle battery charged by the 8 HP Johnson outboard. Plenty of power for lights, VHF and instruments for 2-3 week cruises.

It's a deep cycle battery now. So I can just put two of them in series? We have a solar charger but its a trickle two amp charger.

Thanks, David

No NOT in series.

Parrellel, like Pbzeer said, Neg to Neg; pos to pos..
If you wire in series you double your voltage.
