Lubricating heads?
I took my Y valve apart the other day and cleaned and lubricated it with marine silicone. I used latex was not a fun job. The handle had broken and I spoke with the manufacturer who is sending me a new handle but suggested I 'clean and lube' the valve. When I put it back together I noticed a gallon jug of mazzola corn oil tucked behind the wall. I nearly threw it out but guessed the privious owner may have used this to keep the valve and head lubricated. [I e mailed him and he confirmed it] Is this a well known or familiar practice?

By Marine Silicone, I am hoping you mean silicone grease, rather than silicone sealant. :) I wouldn't use vegetable oil to lubricate seals as a general rule. That's a new one on me, and sounds a bit bizzare.

Sure...veggie oil or mineral oil once a month helps keep the parts of the pump lubricated and working well. We usually did our monthly vinegar de-scaling and then followed it with the mineral oil. Won't do much good for the Y valves though. The vinegar may be more helpful in that scale is often the cause for broken handles. Marelon Y valves are a distinct improvement on cheaper plastic ones I've found.

He's talking about using vegetable oil to lubricate the y-valve, not the pump. BTW, Peggy Hall really frowns upon the use of vegetable or mineral oil since it can cause the holding tank to really stink, since it covers the surface and can reduce the aerobic (non-smelly) bacteria and encourage the anaerobic bacteria (which makes the smells).

We don't pump it into the holding tank! In the islands there are no pumpouts!!

Thanks for the clarification Cam. :D

And here I always thought that the only way to lubicate the valves was by eating greasy foods... Learn something new every time. ROFLMAO

Yeah...but it is more fun your way Boasun! (g)

would'nt drinking a gallon of corn oil make you a little bit ill, I have been told a good swig of it before a night on the turps is a benifit.:D

I don't use corn oil, but I do use some Head Conditoner/Lubricant that came with my boat that the previous owner left. Each time we go out, I put a cap full or so down the head and flush into the lines. Haven't done the vinegar yet.
