What does the TackTic cost then?

Will it manage at night?

It gets dark here.

They don't make Datamarine instruments for small craft anymore, so you could call that a "problem".

There is an aftermarket company called DMI that took over the line. Maybe you could check them out for more info. I think they only sell replacement parts for the wind indicator, but do not sell new complete packages anymore. They do sell and service the speed log (water) and deep instruments.

I looked at the "cheap and cheerful" NASA Clipper system. I could afford like 4 of them in place of the fancy $1500 stuff.

Has anyone fitted the NASA Clipper? What are the opinions?

Thanks.

I'm in the market for something like this too. I already have my anemometer and just need wind direction. I haven't decided on anything yet though.

Enjoying this thread!

Edit .. By the way, the reason I have not decided on a wind direction sensor is because frankly I haven't found one that is a reasonable value. Essentially these things are just molded plastic that is balanced correctly sitting on a swivel mount with (in a good one) an analog pot that connections to an A/D converter or an encoder that eventually creates NMEA data. So far I haven't found one that I thought was worth the money, you could probably build one with 20$us worth of electronics, so I can't see spending 1400+$us on one. If I ever find one that is a few hundred $us and outputs NMEA data I'll get it.

The batteries, once charged, are good for about 200-250 hours of operation. The units will charge in indirect or cloudy conditions. The TackTick gear is a bit more expensive, but that is often offset by the lower installation costs/hassles.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
