tufted topper

Has anyone used this on toip of the std 4" thick foam v-berth or setee? after the weekend on the boat my wife insists (and i agree) that we need to get something to make the bed more comfortable. We tried 2" of memory foam and that did not help. i have a Pearson-27 with the v-berth and dining the same (the table comes down and a cusion is added). I have to get something that can be rolled up and stored. i am interested in all ideas. does no one make a v-berth air bed?

Froli sleep systems: check out this product

I cannot yet post a link, so you'll have to type it in yourself:

nickleatlantic "dot com"

or Google "Froli" sleep systems

I have a friend who used these and swears by them. It's essentially a low profile box spring effect that you can custom shape to your berth.

Also, check out the manufacturers that make products for long distance truckers. Some of them are very good and may be less costly than for boaters.

Short of having a custom inner spring mattress made for either/or both of our cabin's berths, my wife and I elected to go with a memory foam topper. We found out however, after comparing density, thickness and composition of all the types available locally, that the quality of some toppers on the market is very poor.

We ended up with 4.2 Cloud9 Visco Elastic Memory Foam, in the King size 3 inch thickness. I cut it to shape with an electric carving knife to fit perfectly.

What a difference it made over just our 4" thick upholstered mattresses and cushions. I now get a better night's sleep than our Sealy posturpedic bed at home.

Being 4" thick though, it rolls up to a bulky bundle - not a problem with us since it stays on our two dedicated berths, but could present a storage issue with your convertible V-berth.

i looked at the Froli system and it looks like it would be good if my berth wasn't converatable. the storage during the day is key. even the 2" foam i tried was hard to roll up and store but doable. i just didn't think it helped that much. Everything i read about the tufted topper looks like it would work but i was hoping to hear from a Sailnetter that has some real experience with it. Come on folks. someone has a good answer.

Economic Solution

I purchased 3" Serta memory foam toppers from overstock.com ($130) and placed them on top of my existing cushions. They can be trimmed to fit very easily with an electric carving knife. I have them in the main cabin and in the v-berth. A very economical solution and make the berths sleep just like at home. Go to overstock.com, click on bedding, then on memory foam mattress toppers.

I have a Tufted Topper. I would not call the comfort change drastic in the before and after analysis, but it has improved comfort by softening things up some. It is something like a thinner version of a pillow top which they put on new "house" beds these days. It can be rolled up pretty easily and it is fairly lightweight and easy to move around. I originally purchased it for a large aft berth that we use when sleeping dockside. Unless I find a new and improved product at or around the same pricing, I will likely purchase another one for my v berth.

Finally someone who has got one. My dinette/berth has about 4" and we tried 2" memory foam and it helped a little but not enough to put up with the storage. How would the topper compare to the foam? I think the memory foam might not be dense enough to add padding. That is why i hope the topper is better.

Tufted Topper

I bought the Topper for the v-berth since there is a teak trimmed cutout in the center with its own cushion. The cushion mattress would compress so that the teak trim was felt. The Topper improved this but it still can be felt.
