fastening to cabin fiberglass cabin interior
New owner of 1975 Ericson 27.
A few of the screws that hold various interior cosmetic hardware in place are missing, or not holding. What's the best screw to use, or other type of fastening hardware?
On our house, I'd use a drywall sleeve, and screw. Is there some sort of 'sleeve' for the interior fiberglass?
A plastic molly works fine.
It depends on what you're trying to fasten, and where. I dislike using screws in fiberglass, as it really is too brittle IMHO to work properly with screws.
The best way to attach things to the interior of a fiberglass boat is to add wooden stringers or furring strips, by glassing them to the interior, and using wood screws into the furring strip.
Another reason I dislike using screws into fiberglass, is if the laminate is cored, you can create a leak into the core—leading to a very expensive repair in some cases. However, your boat I think is solid fiberglass. In the case of solid laminate, I don't see why you couldn't use the sleeve and screw technique.
Another way to attach things to the interior is to use adhesives or adhesive mounts to hold them to the fiberglass.
The simple fixes are:
1. Use a bigger diameter screw
2. Fill the hole with epoxy putty, drill pilot and try again.
