That's one way to do it...but replacing the alternator is the way to go IMHO. Why mickey-mouse it, when you can do it right... all it takes is someone forgetting what the battery charger is doing, and disconnecting it to charge other batteries... like you might in the middle of the night... without thinking about it... and then you've got a problem.
