Dry-seal

I just bought the "dry-seal" made by Lasdrop to replace a previous dripless seal (of similar design). Basically this is a rubber seal type as the other one was. However one thing that surprized me is how tight the rubber gasket is - for a 1-1/8" shaft it is about 1" in diameter - and pretty hard to squeeze on it (though not impossible). The old seal was just tight enough, barely touching the shaft. I called the manufacturer and they claim that "its ok, it will be tight around the shaft", but I am still not convinced this is the right size. Those guys seem to be a bit careless about sizing (sent me 2" hose diameter for 1-7/8" stern tube and the answer to that is "it will tighten just fine with clamps").

So, any experience with these seals? Are they meant to be so tight? Wouldn't that cause the rubber seal to wear out?

Damn, guess those things are a mistery to you guys just like they are to me. Well, sure hope I won't be left with a hole in my boat.

Funny video ))))

Still doesn't help, though.
