There are merits to both but I would go with Stainless Steel because of their resistance to abrasion on the cutlass bearing and greater resistance to bending. I used to use monel shafts which were close in price to SS but better for underwater applications. I don''t think monel is as inexpensive as it was nor as available but you might ask about monel as well.
