prop shaft

I have my prop in the shop and shaft in the shop right now and the guy called me yesterday and told me my shaft was far from being true(straight).I had a bronze shaft and he wants to sell me a new stainless steel shaft.(about $130.00) What is better for my shaft getting another bronze or getting a stainless steel?

Conventional thinking is to manufacture the prop and shaft from the same material to avoid dissimilar metal corrosion that occurs in fresh or salt water. This will also facilitate easier prop removal for future servicing of the cutlass bearing.

There are merits to both but I would go with Stainless Steel because of their resistance to abrasion on the cutlass bearing and greater resistance to bending. I used to use monel shafts which were close in price to SS but better for underwater applications. I don''t think monel is as inexpensive as it was nor as available but you might ask about monel as well.

Thank-you , I will use my old shaft to hold my bird feeder in my garden.
