Apollo generators?

I have no experience with onboard generators and was looking at a boat with a 4kw Apollo generator. Is this a good unit? I think it is mainly there to charge the batteries and power the refrigeration on this boat which lives on a mooring.

I have never felt the need for a generator and wonder if it is just one (very expensive thing) to go wrong.

Thanks

Generators are as reliable as diesels and require the same care. REALLY nice to have...especially in a live aboard or on a mooring situation. Not necessary as you say..but it sure makes life and charging your house bank easier.
