This was hashed out on another thread... but the reefing line should be about the same size as the halyards on your boat, considering that they take about the same loads as the main sail halyard. BTW, if you have single line reefing, you might want to consider upgrading to double line reefing. Double line reefing gives you better control over the sail shape and is IMHO better and faster to set than single line reefing.
