I'd barrier coat with four layers of Interprotect 2000E, alternating grey and white... then put on whatever bottom paint you want.

Kinda like finding a 58 Austin-Healey in some farmers barn that has been sitting since 59 with 4k miles on it, in Iowa.

That happened to a good friend on mine btw. The guy had no idea what he had sitting in his barn. He was amazed he could sell if for just a bit more than the original invoice, that he still had. Turns out the wife never liked the car, so he just parked it in his barn and covered it with tarps and forgot about it.

That is generally what they recommend to build up the required thickness. However, you can apply thicker layers and do fewer coats, but it will generally look like crap then.

At least four coats, see http://www.yachtpaint.com/USA/hotlin...paintguide.pdf. Maybe SD can explain the purpose of alternating colors, beats me. But you do want to do the first coat of bottom paint in a color different than the subsequent layers, so in the future you can track where the bottom paint is getting thin.

I know alternating colors really helps determine what you've already painted. Maybe that's it?

Alternating the colors helps a lot with determining where you've painted, but it is also very useful for helping you coat the areas around the boat stands. For instance:

The first layer is gray, since the gelcoat is white, and you can paint right up to the boat stand pads. Then you paint a layer of white, and leave about a two-inch margin of gray paint around the pads... then paint a layer a gray and leave a four-inch margin around the pads or about two-inches of white and two inches of gray showing...and then finish with a layer of white—with a six-inch margin around the pads—with two inches of gray, two inches of white and two inches of gray.

Then when you move the boat stands, you can fill in the pads and layer the paint accordingly... adding gray to cover the white square left by the pad.. then white to cover the gray square, and so on.

Also, by alternating colors, you can see if someone has sanded through the barrier coat when you're prepping the boat for re-painting. If there's an area that is gray or grayish, they've sanded through at least the outermost layer of barrier coat. If you had all white, you wouldn't be able to tell if they had sanded down through the barrier coat as easily—if you had all gray, you could tell they sanded through the barrier coat...but not if they've sanded into it...

One more dumb question. There are two factory scribed lines on the hull, do I use barrier coat (4 coats) to the highest line - I would think I should, then use antifouling up to the bottom line......right?
I'm also assuming that I just paint over the through hull flanges - is this correct?

That's a great idea regarding alternating barriercoat colors sailingdog, especially when faced with the chore of moving boat stands. When I contracted out my barriercoating job, the workers sprayed Interprotect 3000 in multiple coats, allowing the required drying time between coats.

I was told they exceeded Interlux's recommended thickness . . . and I believe them based upon the total gallons of the stuff I was charged for ($$$$).

I wonder though, if varying the color would increase the expense of the project, due to the need for cleaning the spray equipment between each coat, increased material charges and extra handling.

If you're doing it yourself, you're probably rolling it on, not spraying it, so I don't think that is much of a problem. If you're paying someone else to do it...then you have to let them do it whatever way they're going to, unless you want to pay extra to have it done the way I'm suggesting.
