Diesel exhaust smoke

So, my yanmar diesel behaved pretty well (for all of 6 or so hours I used it so far), not much smoke at all, may be just a bit during warm-up. Today I did a full service - replaced all fluids, filters etc. Once I started the engine - it looked like there is a fire or something - lots and lots of smoke out of the tailpipe. And, while it went down some in a few minutes, it really did not go away. I can't figure out what color it is - white, grey, blue (not black, thats all I know).

Anyway - what the heck could I have done that made it do that?

you probably have an air leak into the fuel system. If you've replace the 10um Yanmar filter, then check the housing and make sure you replace the O-ring with new. Check the Primary filter for leak as well. Twice I've same problem as yours, lots of black smoke & unburnt fuel. Traced to leaky fuel filter assembly (leaks air in). How that cause black smoke? don't know, go figure. Good luck.

how easy did it start after the service? i would think that if there was air in the system it would be very hard to start. did you bleed the system after doing the service?

also what EXACTLY did you replace - both fuel filters (primary and secondary?), is the motor fresh or raw water cooled? did you replace the coolant if fresh water? did you replace the thermostat?

how long before the heavy smoke turned to light? for me, now that we are having temperture swings from 70's -> 40's - when I start up motor in the morning i get a little light white/grey smoke but it goes away after a min or two - likely due to some condensation in the exhaust or water lift muffler i guess.

? check oil level. If overfilled you may be burning lube oil.
