Trouble Shooting Moors Depth Sounder

I was wondering if there are any electronic techies here who know a bit about the basic things to check on a depth Sounder. There is a unit on my boat made by Moors Electronics, model LDC. The guy I bought my boat from told me it did not work, but he did not know why. I had intended to just replace it, but it seems like a relatively expensive unit, so I figure I may as well give it a shot before I chuck it. Are there any basic things to check and ways to check them? For example, how would I check if the Transducer is operational? I imagine I would just use a multimeter, but not sure. Anything within the display unit that is an easy fix/common problem?
I contacted Moors to try and get an owners manual, but they were not overly helpful. Any input is appreciated.

And yes, I could always ship it back to Moors, and after shipping from Canada, $20 to have it inspected, and then a repair bill, I would be better off just replacing it. If I could do it myself for a couple of bucks I figure it is worth trying. I really do not believe in tossing something away without trying to find out why it is not working.

Hello,

You can buy a new fish finder for less than $100, so I would not spend a lot of time or money trying to repair your unit.

That said, check the basics - power to the unit, a good ground, and no broken wires. If that doesn't do it, I would forget about it and just buy a new one.
