Add your sales tax and you may find it cheaper elsewhere...

Knock of another 20% and Worst Marine might actually be priced with everybody elses regular price. Having said that, I like the crew at the store near me but I still only use the for convience items.

Morgan -- The Waste Marine internet prices are much lower (usually) than the store prices. Check it out.

They used to match defenders prices, but don't any more. WM still has to charge sales tax, and their prices are usually more than 10% above the prices at Defender, Hamilton Marine, Mauri Pro Sailing, etc.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

West is ok for some things, but $$$$. I only use the local store if i really need something today, and I can't get it somewhere else. I have a good connection at Tidewater in HDG and he always beats WM for me. He recently got me $900 (retail) worth of Lewmar stainless blocks for $400 ( just a little over his cost). Thats all I need to stop going to WM. If they don't have it, they order it for me. Really good people.

The only WM special I keep an eye out for is the rope sale (they call it rope I call it line). They always seem to have the same crap on sale, they just change the name of the sale.

Dictated, but not read.

Somewhere in here I did a comparison of 25 commonly used items that were carried by West and Defender about a year ago.
At that time, Defender BEAT West on 23 of 25 items...was the same on one item and higher on one item that West had on sale. Average price difference was 18% BEFORE any sales taxes. Even on an ANCHOR shipped...Defenders landed cost was significantly less.
WEST in my opinion has some really good people working in the stores but is badly mismanaged as a company and has extremely high overhead costs.
Under SEC investigation for accounting practices and just lowered 2007 expectations again, closing stores etc., stock is at a 52 week low.
If ya can't do better than this with a virtual RETAIL monopoly on boating items...you are ripe for the picking.

Cam -- West needs to decide what kind of retailer they want to be. It's confusing when they have different prices online vs. their retail stores. They have a hard time competing with Defender, and with a lot of other online specialty marine outfits that sell stuff in particular niches, like electronics or line/rigging. Retail store wize they bought out Boat/US so only have places like Fawcett's in Naptown for competition, and Fawcett's is a mere shadow of what it once was due to poor management. Thus, one would think the West stores would do well, but that isn't happening either. I feel for them because they are losing at both ends of the spectrum.
