I removed the wooden boomkin from my boat and am going to replace it with a stainless boomkin that mounts in a different place. The old holes (3/4") that go throught the deck need to be filled and faired. I guess I need to chamfer the holes from both sides and then fill with a product good for the purpose.
Would anybody care to confirm this procedure and make suggestiond for the filler? There are hundreds of "fillers" out there and I want this to be permanant.
Use a paste mix of West System epoxy and collodial silica filler. Tape the bottom of the holes, fill from the top, to a level just below the deck. Overfill the top of the holes with a matching gelcoat, trim, wetsand, compound and polish.
SF has it pretty well said...except if you use West System epoxy, you'll have to clean off the amine blush before applying the gelcoat... if you use MAS epoxies you won't.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

If you're new to the Sailnet Forums... please read this POST.
If you want to be rid of the boomkin altogether, I recall Bill Crealock once commenting that doing so is perfectly acceptable. If you plan to fit a windvane, getting rid of the boomkin would make things much easier -- I would think.
Nice looking boat. wtf was that boat doing in tucson? waiting for the big one??

Wow! Very nice, and good for you! Please keep us posted with more info and photos as you go along.
P.S. I bet a lot of folks who are interested will not see these photos because of the title of this thread. Might I suggest posting a new thread in "Buying a Boat" when you have a chance, maybe call the thread something like "Westsail 32 Time Capsule"? You could keep the thread going with updates as you progress. (As if you don't have enough to do already!)
